Introducing David Hughes, new Minister to Students
It is with great excitement we introduce the new Minister to Students, David Hughes. David will join our church staff on March 5th. David recently served as Youth Minister of First Baptist Church of Easley, S.C. where he has served faithfully for more than seven years and has developed a very active and vibrant youth ministry. He has worked with many ministry volunteers and teachers utilizing both their presence and participation in his ministry with youth. Prior to this position, David served with the Cliffs Preserve in Patagonia, Chile as the Director of Wellness and Community Development. While there, he co-founded VES, a service program focusing on the wellness and educational needs of youth and children.
David’s many strengths include great organization and communication skills, successful youth ministry experience, proven leadership, and a passion to see youth grow in their relationship with Christ.
David and his wife, Rebecca, have been married for 11 years and have a five-year-old daughter, Maggie. Rebecca is from Augusta, also graduated from Furman and is serving as an elementary school music teacher. When not with youth, David likes the outdoors, fishing, going to the gym and reading.
The committee thanks you for all of your prayers, suggestions, and words of encouragement. We hope you will join us in the excitement we feel about David serving as our next Minister to Students.

“David is a very gifted minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He’s deeply committed and very thoughtful. He thrives on fulfilling the mission of being the church. David and Rebecca are a wonderful couple who deeply love each other and deeply desire to experience spiritual transformation within the body of Christ. Maggie is precious! “I am excited about David serving the Lord as our next Youth Minister. During our search process, David consistently stood out from the rest of the approximately 100 candidates we reviewed. He is a dynamic, organized, and thoughtful individual who will bring a new energy to our program. His experience, both in youth ministry and the mission field, equips him to develop our young adults into passionate disciples of Christ.” Paul Elkin, Search Committee Member
“I am very excited to have David Hughes and his sweet family joining with us here! During each of our conversations with David, it was evident that he has a sincere heart for God and for sharing His Truth with others. As a parent of youth, I am encouraged by David’s passion to build relationships and to teach them the way of becoming true disciples of Christ. There are so many reasons why David is the committee’s choice, but the most important one is that I believe he is God’s choice for us.” Rhonda Davis, Search Committee Member
“Our committee developed many goals for our next youth pastor, one of which was the desire to find a youth pastor with experience. When we received David’s resume, I was impressed with his current youth ministry experience as well as his prior mission’s service. Throughout the interview process, David continued to impress me with his maturity and desire to lead students to Christ. I am thrilled to have David and his family join our FBC family. He has a passion for Jesus and a desire to teach the scriptures to youth. He brings maturity and the ability to partner with our dedicated parent volunteers and will be a great leader for them.”

It is an honor to offer a commendation of David Hughes. In his ministry to students at First Baptist Church, Easley, SC, I have been privileged to serve with him as Minister of Pastoral Support. David Hughes is competent and caring! Administratively, his invitational leadership style invites others to engage with him. Youth and adults partner together in mission projects and educational endeavors. He personally lives the Great Commission, moving the focus of the Gospel beyond self to Christ and others. David not only leads, but also listens and incorporates the idea and energy of others in his ministry with students and adults of all ages.
His faith commitment is evidenced in his personal family and in being a dedicated and disciplined student of scripture. In the various congregational leadership assignments, I have observed his personal preparation, ability to listen and gift of leadership that encourages a wholeness of understanding of person’s life of head, heart and conduct.
