About Us

Our History

FBCAugusta 115-2550x1694First Baptist Church of Augusta began humbly in 1817, with just 18 people uniting together to form the Baptist Praying Society. By 1821, the Society built its first sanctuary and began a time of growth. Many years later, the church tore down the original building, replacing it with a beautiful sanctuary designed similar to the Church of the Madeleine in Paris and dedicated it in 1902. This building still stands today at 802 Greene Street.

Over time, the property on Greene Street could no longer meet the needs of the congregation and its growth. In the early 1970s, the church made the very difficult decision to relocate to its current residence on Walton Way extension. Since that time, the church has continued to minister to the city of Augusta and Richmond County, while locating itself in such a way to be able to foster new and vibrant ministry to the rapidly growing Columbia County area.

Our Core Values

We value:

FBCAugusta 620-2550x1694Worship – We are Created to Celebrate: Out of God’s pleasure we are created and from that joy we celebrate with our Creator through worship. While there are many forms and styles of worship, authenticity and excellence guides all our Sunday services.

Formation – We are Rooted for Growth: We are on a life-long journey of growing in relationship as followers of Jesus. Through Bible Study, prayer, and practicing the disciplines of faith we seek to develop our faith as well as mature in spiritual formation.

Community – We are Connected through Fellowship: We share Life Together as a community of believers. The New Testament word is “Koinonia” which is variously translated as share, community, and fellowship. As such we share in laughter as well as grief, seeking to practice the faith and the living of our days together.

Mission – We are Engaged for Service: We are participating with God in the work of God, the Missio Dei. Every member is a missionary serving as God calls with the gifts that the Spirit has equipped.

Evangelism – We are Commissioned by Good News: The Gospel is a gift that is given as grace and a gift to be shared relationally.
